Dear Friends of CINI,
On 1st February we celebrated the 52nd Foundation Day at the spacious grounds of Cyril Academy. Children of Cyril Academy and young people representing various field units of CINI performed beautifully on stage. Four adolescent peer leaders from four states of India – Assam, West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand graced the event as the Chief Guests. It was good to meet our ex-colleagues, donors and local community members at the event. We presented glimpses of our activities of the past year as well the challenges faced, working in close collaboration and supported by respective state governments.
Dr Indrani Bhattacharya, CEO, visited Sydney from 18th February to attend an international conference on drowning. She shared CINI’s experience to prevent drowning of children in Sunderbans. Over the past decade Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, cancer have led to more deaths than communicable diseases such as cholera, malaria, plague etc. As most NCDs are preventable and begin in childhood, early detection and preventive measures can stop this trend. To counter NCDs, “Shubhayu” clinic and services was inaugurated at Pailan on 5th March to screen and prevent NCDs among CINI employees, mothers and children, every Thursday. A “Dialogue on Prevention of NCDs” by specialists will be held at Gol Park premises starting from April every month. On 16th March, CINI was awarded the Glenmark Nutrition Award in Delhi as one of the five finalists in India. You will read more about our activities in the newsletter. We are grateful to all of you for your continued support and encouragement.
Dr Samir Chaudhuri
Founder & Secretary

The clinic focuses on screening common lifestyle-related conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and mental health issues. It operates every Thursday from 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. Initial observations highlight significant health concerns among beneficiaries. Many individuals were found to have abdominal obesity, high-normal or Grade I hypertension, and some were pre-diabetic or diabetic. Stress, often linked to family and workplace issues, was also commonly reported.
To address these challenges, SHUBHAYU emphasizes personalized counselling, including tailored diet plans, physical activity guidance, and mental well-being support. Through its holistic approach, SHUBHAYU is playing a vital role in promoting preventive healthcare and empowering individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles, ultimately contributing to the reduction of the NCD burden.
Representing CINI at the conclave, Mr. Swapan Bikash Saha, Project Director – Nutrition & Mr. Indranil Ghosh, Programme Manager – Urban Health received this prestigious recognition.

As a result of these sustained efforts, the Zilla Parishad budget passed on 17 February 2026 reflected increased allocations for education, safety, and child protection. This demonstrates growing recognition of children’s voices in governance and decision-making. Children also developed and submitted Gram Panchayat Report Cards, which were formally acknowledged by Panchayats. This strengthened transparency, accountability, and grassroots participation.
The van campaign was formally flagged off by key district and block-level officials, including Assistant District Magistrates (ADMs), Block Development Officers (BDOs), Zilla Sabhadipatis, District Inspectors of Social Education, District Child Protection Officers, Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members, and Municipal Chairpersons.
They also reflected on their participation across various advocacy platforms—from local forums to international stages. These experiences have not only enabled them to voice their concerns but have also helped shift societal perceptions. Once marginalized and overlooked, the Street Champions are now recognized and cited as role models within their own communities, marking a powerful transformation in both identity and acceptance.
Adolescent Resource Centre (ARC) of CINI participated in a Policy Dialogue on Reimagining Adolescent Healthcare, organised by the State Health Systems Resource Centre (SHSRC), Gujarat., at Gandhinagar.
The dialogue brought together dignitaries and experts from across states, institutions, and organisations, including WHO, UNICEF, and other key stakeholders working in adolescent health and wellbeing. We were honoured to have the opportunity to share CINI’s successful adolescent programme implementation model, highlighting learnings from the field and evidence-based approaches that strengthen adolescent-friendly health systems. It was a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and collective reflection.

Laxmi Singha’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and collective action. After losing her parents at a young age and discontinuing her education due to hardship, she was identified during the Healthy School Programme. Through coordinated efforts involving teachers, the Gram Panchayat, Block administration, and child protection systems, Laxmi was enrolled under the District Sponsorship Scheme. Today, with financial support of ₹4000 per month, she has resumed her education in Class VIII. With renewed hope, Laxmi now dreams of becoming a doctor—proving that timely support and strong community systems can transform lives.
